One of the most violent disputes between historians took place in the half century that started with the Dreyfus affair in the 1890s and culminated in the fall of France in 1940. Historians were deeply involved in this intellectual struggle, reflecting the divisions between liberals and conservatives and between internationalists and isolationists. The McCarthy period in the US in the late 1940s and the early '50s was in part the product of a strenuous effort to discredit Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal era.

It is not, however, confined to this country. The history of wars is an age-old study, the wars of historians a more recent subject.
